Welcome to

Ames Buddhist Mahasangha

American Zen

Ames Buddhist Mahasangha is an ecumenical American Buddhist sangha (with primarily Korean Soen and Vietnamese Thiền lineage roots). As a modern American sangha, we vow to act with compassion, wisdom and equity, to share resources, and to build relationships that empower liberation from dukkha.  We are based in Ames, Iowa, but include members across the country.

Emptiness for Beginners (and We're All Beginners) Weekend Retreat

Śūnyatā is one of the most misunderstood Buddhist concepts, which is not helped by its very poor translation as “emptiness.”  This weekend will focus on the warm embrace of Śūnyatā, examining it through multiple meditative techniques. We will use as the basis of our examination a pamphlet begun by the late Zen Master Wonji Dharma, as well as by exploring how Śūnyatā manifests in movement through Aparigraha in yoga.

The retreat will be held the Pure Land Retreat Center at 1392 West 28th St. North, Newton, IA.  It will begin at 7pm on Friday, April 26 and end by 4pm on Sunday, April 28. The cost for lodging and all meals for the weekend is $250, with an early bird registration fee of $200 if paid by April 1.  Bedrooms are shared with other participants, and there are two cabins available.

The retreat will be led by Zen monks Ven. Dr. Douglas Cheolsoeng Gentile, Rev. Faith Shim’min Winchester, and yoga instructor Jennifer Gentile (RYT500).  Space is limited to 12 people.  If you wish to reserve a spot, please email cheolsoengprajna(at)gmail.com.
